Landfill gas is (sort of) already being used as an alternative to fossil fuels! That's pretty cool, right?
And we can mine landfills for resources! Sure we could ultimately save energy by just recycling things now and continuing to reuse the same material instead of having to dig it all up later, but where is the excitement in that?
Sure it will be a lot cleaner and better for the environment and our health to take care of it now instead of later, but that is so much work! Who can afford to do the right thing anyway?
Besides, where will we build our parks and subdivisions if not on top of old landfills?
