I've been playing Dagorhir for a while, and it's great fun. But my brother and I have wanted something a little more serious to do as well. We checked out SCA, but we weren't too impressed. So we're in the process of coming up with our own battle game. We have a long way to go before we have enough armor to make it safe, though.
But I went ahead and made a wooden waster anyway. I found a board that was lying around and cut out this shape. I'm still going to add a guard in the future, who knows when. I was going to taper the blade, but I got lazy because the saw was giving me trouble. Also, the tip is rounded for safety since it's for actual use. Most wasters are a little pointy, but we considered that too dangerous. Stabbing will be allowed with this weapon.
We decided to test it on my brother's shield, which we've been trashing to see what it can take. Unfortunately, the blade split in three pieces down its length. Not wanting all my work to go to waste, I glued it back together and taped it up, hence what you see here. I'm hoping it'll at least last a few duels, but it may end up being just a prop after I get some better wood.
That's a 45cm (18-inch) ruler. The sword is about 115 cm (~ 3' 9 1/4")
